Getting Even Further Around

If you are not lucky enough to live in California, but you have a long travel to get there, you maybe want to arrive there early (or leave there late) and look around a bit more in the additional days of your stay.

Optimization task:

  • if you do it alone, it is maybe a bit boring, and expensive
  • travelling with some fellow F/OSS geeks is more fun
  • car rental and fuel costs are best for 2,3,4 persons, depending on size of car and luggage
    • car rental is e.g. 320 USD per week for a toyota prius (good for 2 passengers + lots of luggage, low fuel costs). So, if you share that car, you save 160 USD per week + half of the fuel costs.
  • motel room costs are best for 2n persons (usually 2 beds, you pay per room and night, not per person)
    • motel is usually about 60 USD. So, if you share a room, you save 210 USD per week.
  • national park entry is usually(?) per car (not per person)

Thus, for the folks wanting to stay longer, we obviously need a bit of coordination to have more fun and less costs.

So, if you are staying in California for longer than the 2 summit days, enter your data in the table below, so that people with matching dates / plans can get into contact with each other:

[edit] Bike Riding

I've noticed that you can hire bikes from Fishermans Wharf and I'm a bit interested in going riding. If anyone else is interested in doing this after the summit, let me know. Pushy Way To See The Bay Jason Cleeland

[edit] Geocaching

Is anyone up for some geocaching? If so, let me know rediguana@gmail.com - I will probably stay for a couple of extra days to go caching :) Haven't yet finalised my movements as I'm heading elsewhere in the US after the summit. I will probably have a rental, and am quite comfortable driving on the wrong side of the road! Will add my details to table later this week as once more travel details are fleshed out.

Note: as you'll quickly notice, they drive on the RIGHT side of the road. But even if one knows that and is used to it, one has to be a bit careful when doing a left turn into a bigger (4 track) road. :)

LOL - that's OK, I've been to the US before and have probably driven at least 5k miles on the wrong side of the road ;)
