[edit] Webspam - What has changed since last year?

This was scheduled as a follow-up to the Webspam session at the 2007 Mentor Summit to see what has (and what hasn't) changed since then.

[edit] CAPTCHAs

  • As predicted, graphical CAPTCHAs are now widely broken (including, for example, GMail's). So they are mostly unreliable now if you're using a popular implementation.
  • The MoinMoin Wiki project reports successful use of Textchas, i.e. simple textual questions. As long as the questions are unique and site-related, they have proven to be reliable.
    • On a side note, if you log the questions and how they were answered, you can see where people have problems with (so that you can improve the question) and which questions may have been broken (so you can replace them).

[edit] Misc.

Other than that, there wasn't really any change. Spammers are still spamming for plain text stuff that's easy to filter ("Viagra", not "V1gr4").
